Following the drafting of the Public Private Partnership Strategy in Retail Industry (PPP/R) in Uganda, Uganda Retailer and Wholesalers Association (URWA) is establishing the National Retail Council (NRC) to support some of the proposed programs and frameworks.

National Retail Council (NRC) will be a club of dedicated retail industry leaders, stakeholders, players, government departments and professionals which will be assisted by the contributions from expert advisory groups in specialist areas. Priorities will be set by the executive led by the Chairman. The council will identify issues and facilitate R&D efforts to uplift standards in Uganda’s retail industry. NRC supports the retail industry, stakeholders and policymakers to build sustainable partnerships through networking, leadership, collaboration, professional development and research.

The National Retail Council will represent the interests of the retail industry sector on a national basis such as in relation to government affairs, taxes and representation on national policy making bodies.  The council will be represented on areas like supermarkets, hyper-supermarkets, chain supermarkets, community-focused grocery shops, wholesalers, consumers, manufacturers, suppliers, country agents, business institutions, academia, economists, retail labour and employments issues, tax authorities, tax consultants, accountants and auditors, open wet markets, shopping malls, retail property managers, retail rent, trade ministry, distributors, used clothing, used home appliances, media, local government, security, police, retail payments technology, finance and monetary policy, consultants, environment, local content, multinational companies, FDIs, fresh foods, key retail clusters/centres, transport and logistics, agriculture, safety and standards, policy and planning, health authorities, insurance, government departments, R&D, hawkers and  other relevant bodies and personnel.


Our Vision: NRC will have effective representation of the retail industry, working closely with retail industry leaders, stakeholders, consumers and retail associations to promote choice, diversity and partnership in retail sector and advocating for improved retail environment.

Our Mission: NRC will serve and support its members by:
·         Establishing a national advocacy for the retail sector in Uganda
·         Providing strong and effective representation of the retail sector to Uganda government and other stakeholders
·         Promoting choice, diversity and autonomy
·         Highlighting the contribution of the retail industry to Uganda’s economy and employment
·         Securing appropriate level of government recognition for retailers in Uganda
·         Work together in a multi-disciplined team
·         Focus on meeting the needs of the public
·         Encourage partnerships, between retailers, government, local governments, policy-makers and retail subsector associations.
